Louis

Louis and I first met in high school back in 2012. At that time, we both dreamed of becoming medical doctors. But as we spent more time together, talking about our interests and ambitions, we discovered a shared passion for technology. We decided to join the EECS family instead, a decision that would shape both of our futures. We joined NTU EE and CS, and later UIUC and UPenn, respectively.

Louis always had a passion for using technology to make this world a better place. He dreamed of using technology to improve education and make it more accessible. He often thought deeply about the meaning of life and chose to live a different and meaningful life. Everyone around him thought he was an elegant, kind, and beautiful person.

His enthusiasm was contagious. Being around him pushed me to think bigger about what I could contribute. He was a significant reason why I decided to pursue my PhD abroad—to make more meaningful contributions to this world.

What made Louis truly special was his presence in every important moment of my life. He was there at my music demonstration, cheering me on. He celebrated my graduation with me. He stood by my side at my wedding. He welcomed my daughter into the world. He was there when I started my first internship in the US. Through high school and university, through 13 years of growing from teenagers into men, he remained my closest friend.

Countless memories still come to mind. I remember the time we worked on our high school project together, when we visited the famous mouth-foot painter Yang En-Dian (楊恩典). I remember how he accompanied me through the difficult time when I went through a breakup. I remember the time he came home with me, introducing me to great tech pioneers from around the world. I remember the many hours we spent in the NTU dorm, where we did final projects together, watched Interstellar, played Nidhogg, explored good restaurants, and chatted through the night.

I will always remember Louis as the person who broadened my view and inspired me to positively impact others. His belief in using our skills to help others continues to guide my work and my life.

Rest in peace, my friend.
